Setting the standards for internists

The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) is the umbrella organization of internists organized in 1953 with Dr. Gonzalo F. Austria as founding president. It was primarily established to facilitate the continuing medical education of internists and other physicians, certification and regulation of subspecialty of internal medicine, and accreditation and certification of training programs for internal medicine in the country.

At present, PCP has 6,318 fellows, diplomates, and affiliate members. It is an affiliate society of the Philippine Medical Association and a member-society of the International Society of Internal Medicine. The College has 14 clinical subspecialties and affiliate societies and 11 regional chapters across the country.

The PCP sees to it that it meets its vision of setting the highest standards and ethical ideals in the practice of internal medicine, providing dynamic leadership in the promotion of health and quality of life in the management of disease, and helping in the formulation of health policies.

The same is true for its mission which is to lead in setting the highest standards in medical diagnosis, treatment, prevention and service by providing CME and training to its members; to help create an environment that promotes ethical, superior yet cost-effective medical care; to give tips or advice, including incentives for research and publication; to provide timely communication and advice to health agencies, government, and nongovernment organizations; and to provide education and information to internists.

PCP holds scientific conferences, lectures conferences, and panel discussions with both foreign and local lecturers. In Metro Manila alone, it conducts an average of eight meetings a year. It also hosts regional postgraduate courses in internal medicine for affiliate members, resident-trainees and PCP members in the provinces. An annual convention is held in May and a midyear convention in October or November.

Next year, PCP will hold its 36th annual convention on May 3 to 6 while the PCP Western Visayas-Panay chapter's 18th annual convention will be on October 18 to 20 in Iloilo City.

For the hottest news on PCP, trust its several publications to deliver it. There is the Philippine Journal of Internal Medicine which comes every 2 months, a newsletter which comes every four months, a membership directory and PCP Profile.

Focus on continuing education

Now 54 years old (it was founded on February 24, 1951), the Philippine Society of Anesthesiology (PSA) takes continuing medical education seriously. Apart from holding an annual national convention to update its members on the latest in the field of anesthesiology, it holds monthly clinical-case conferences and regular research forums on interesting cases.

And for anesthesiologists in the country's far-flung areas who cannot come to Metro Manila to attend medical conventions and symposiums, it developed the Distance Education Program for Anesthesiologists (DEPA). Modules are sent to those enrolled and meetings are held once a month.

A subcommittee was formed to make sure members who attend CME programs receive appropriate credits.

To augment residency-training programs in some hospitals, it conducts basic science and clinical lectures for residents. Postgraduate courses are also held twice a year.

This year, the society installed Text Link to enhance communication with and among its members. Members receive news and announcements through text messages.

To assist clinicians doing research, the society is creating a statistical database that will serve as a source of relevant data and information on anesthesiology in the Philippines. It is also now developing clinical practice guidelines to set the standards for anesthesiology practice. The guidelines are target for release in mid-2006.

As part of its effort to make anesthesiology services available to needed areas of the country, the PSA signed a memorandum of understanding with the League of Municipalities for conducting surgical missions with the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS). It also launched, together with the Department of Health, PCS, and Unilab, the Specialists to the Province Program under which areas that do not have surgeons and anesthesiologists are identified and efforts are made to make these services available. So far, anesthesiologists have been sent to Bohol and Batangas. The National Disaster Coordinating Council and the PSA are also finalizing a separate agreement for quick deployment of anesthesiologists in times of emergencies and disasters. PSA has also joined the National Surgical Manpower Development Program.

Meanwhile the PSA's midyear conference in Butuan, attended by 350 delegates, focused on scientific sessions targeted to those practicing in the provinces. Next year, the PSA will hold for the first time a joint midyear convention with the PCS and the Philippine Neurological Association.
