PSP hosts ASEAN pain conference
Since its founding in 1987, the Pain Society of the Philippines has been working hard to correct misconceptions about pain and to help people suffering from pain get appropriate treatment.
This means not only holding regular conventions and continuing-medical-education activities for its members and other physicians, but also increasing public awareness about pain and pain management.
Among its priorities is to promote the concept of pain as the fifth vital sign. As part of its educational campaign, the society is encouraging medical schools to emphasize pain management in their medical curriculum.
This year, the PSP led in the celebration of the Global Day against Pain on October 16, which focused on "Pain in Children" in an effort to raise awareness on the need to acknowledge, assess, and properly treat pain among pediatric patients. A highlight of the celebration was a walkathon from the Museo Pambata to Plaza Rajah Sulayman in Intramuros. As a treat for kids, a program featuring storytelling, magic, and clowns was held.
Government agencies and nongovernment organizations signed a memorandum of agreement pledging commitment to make sure that "no Filipino child should be in pain."
For next year, the PSP has lined up a series of scientific lectures about pain. It will hold its 14th annual convention on April 6 to 8 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City. Its theme will be Pag-isipan, Pag-usapan, Subukan, Giginhawa Kaya? This will be preceded by a refresher course on the management of cancer-related pain.
The weeklong celebration of Pain Awareness Week in October will feature, among other activities, an art exhibit on pain.
The year draws to a close with the first annual congress of the Association of Souteast Asian Pain Societies (ASEAPS) slated November 29 to December 2 at the Westin Philippine Plaza. Its theme will be ASEAN Perspectives on Pain Management: Addressing the Divide between Pain Concepts and Clinical Practice. About 1,000 delegates are expected from ASEAN countries, such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Fetus as a patient congress in 2007
The Fetus as a Patient Institute, Philippines (FPIP) hosts the 23rd International Congress of the Fetus as a Patient International Society (FPIS) on March 15 to 17, 2007 at the EDSA Shangri-la, Manila. Carrying the themed Ills from the Womb: Defusing a Ticking Bomb, the congress aims to study the effects of maternal and fetal malnutrition, present strategies on how to optimize intrauterine fetus conditions, and determine the optimum timing of delivery and its impact on the offspring. Dr. Frank Chervenak of the United States is the president of the FPIS while Dr. Amaryllis Yazon heads the FPIP, which was founded in 1989.
Dr. Corazon Yabes-Almirante, congress president and FPIP board member, says that the congress will help address the looming epidemic and ticking bomb of chronic illnesses predicted to explode by 2025 in many developing countries.
"Evidence from recent research, both epidemiological and experimental, has established a relationship between birth weight and metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease," she notes. Prof. David Barker will explain this phenomenon in his hypothesis, the "fetal programming and fetal origins of adult diseases."
Other congress topics would be on current statistics on metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease compared with 20 years ago; the girl child, the future mother; maternal nutrition; developments in prenatal care; low-birth-weight infants: its causes, diagnosis, prevention and management; global strategies on how to lower the incidence of low birth weight infants; antepartum fetal assessment; right timing of delivery; placental pathology; preeclampsia; preterm labor; preterm prelabor rupture of membranes; multiple pregnancies; intrauterine growth restriction; intraamniotic and perinatal infections; genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus, hypertension and coronary heart disease; gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive complications of pregnancy; the GRIT study; low birth weight infants; small for gestational age infants; prevention of cerebral palsy; and obesity in childhood and adolescence.
