"Punching out" lung diseases
It had been a busy year for the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP). Aside from holding its annual convention, the PCCP conducted several activities geared toward increasing public awareness on lung diseases, keeping treatment guidelines up to date, and promoting health research and education.
"Punch Out Baga," a forum on lung health and lung diseases like COPD, asthma and tuberculosis, was held in cooperation with the Philippine College of Physicians and the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS). The yearly asthma forum was conducted in cooperation with the National Asthma Movement. The society also conducts regular free clinics and health-education forums in Caloocan and Payatas with the help of German doctors.
Intensifying its campaign against smoking, the PCCP took part in the recent Southeast Asia Games hosted by the Philippines. The society's tobacco council fielded personnel to help ensure that the games remain smoke-free. It also held a badminton tournament to promote healthy lifestyle and wean people away from smoking. The council is also working closely with the Department of Health and the PCS to lobby for local-government ordinances that will make more cities and towns smoke-free. Right now, three cities--Makati, Davao, and Marikina--have been declared smoke-free by their respective governments.
The PCCP also took part in the "Relay for Life" led by the PCS to promote awareness on prevention of cancer.
To facilitate sharing of knowledge and information, the PCCP conducted an interhospital symposium. It also trained health workers involved in the DOTS (directly-observed treatment, short-course) program for tuberculosis.
Workshops were held to review the core curriculum for the pulmonary fellowship program and assess training programs. Updated this year were the guidelines on management of asthma, tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Still ongoing is the BOLD (Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease) Study, a joint initiative of the PCCP's COPD council and the COPD Foundation to determine COPD prevalence in the country. The council led in the celebration of World COPD Day on November 16.
This year's annual convention held on March 1 to 4 focused on Excellence in Pulmonary Medicine.
The society's 2006 annual convention with the theme PCCP on Silverscreen will be held on February 28 to March 3.
