Busy year for nurses
The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) was first known as the Filipino Nurses Association (FNA), founded during a meeting of 150 nurses presided over by Anastacia Giron-Tupas.
In 1996, FNA was renamed PNA. In the same year, its office at 1663 F.T. Benitez Street in Malate, Manila was set up.
Another milestone for the FNA was when it was accepted as a member of a Congress held in Montreal, Canada on July 8 to 13, 2001.
It was no less than then President Carlos P. Garcia who proclaimed the last week of October as Nurses' Week to promote professional growth towards the attainment of highest standards of nursing. He also authorized the then FNA to take charge of its observance.
Former President Fidel V. Ramos declared 1997 as Nurses Diamond Jubilee Year.
The PNA is a member of the International Council of Nurses and was adjudged the Most Outstanding Accredited Professional Organization in 2003. The association is committed to provide opportunities for the professional growth and development of world class Filipino nurses. It also aims to provide strategic directions and programs that enhance nurses' competencies here and abroad; sustain the quality work life and collegial interactions among them; strengthen their internal capacity and capabilities for quality care and services; and explore possibilities to unify the profession.
The association was abuzz with international activities in 2005, among them the International Nursing Development Forum held in Wuxi, China from July 9 to 11; the Nursing Leaders Training Program in Taiwan from August 1 to September 24; the International Nursing Research Conference in Selangor, Malaysia on August 29 and 30; the 9th Australasian Menopause Society in Sheraton Mirage Resort, Gold Coast from September 22 to 24; the Perioperative Care: On the Shores of Excellence in Dublin, Ireland on June 30; and the Workforce Health Systems Migration Capacity Building held at the Glasgow Caledonian University School of Nursing Midwifery and Community Health.
Next year, the 9th International Congress on Nursing, which focuses on Informatics Consumer-centered, Computer-supported Care for Healthy People, will be held from June 11 to 14 in Seoul, Korea.
