Schering Expands in Singapore
SINGAPORE
American pharmaceutical giant Schering-Plough has launched two drug manufacturing plants in Singapore worth US$180 million: a sterile facility for the freeze-drying, finishing, and packaging of leading drugs for the treatment of hepatitis C and Crohn's disease, and another to manufacture Zetia tablets, a new drug for cholesterol management.
Teo Chee Hean, minister for education and second minister for defense, said at the launching ceremonies Schering-Plough also plans to build a new plant costing around US$200 million to manufacture bulk chemicals.
"Schering-Plough's successful and rapid growth in Singapore has made the company the largest pharmaceuticals investor here," he said.
The opening of Schering-Plough's facilities followed the launching by another United States pharmaceutical giant, Eli Lilly and Co., of a drug research center, which it said is the first of its kind in Asia.
Singapore has been pushing the development of biomedical sciences to reduce its dependence on the electronics sector.
