DINING

GERRY'S GRILL: BIG AT 10

It is said that lurking behind a sophisticated palate is a country tongue, thus the popularity of regional cuisine. Banking on this premise, Gerry Apolinario started a small Filipino restaurant-bar along Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City on Valentine's Day in 1977.

It was the culmination of a dream-a decent barkadahan place, where Gerry and his drinking buddies could chill out in peace with their girlfriends and eat their favorite comfort food amid a refreshing tropical ambiance (with clean restrooms to boot!).

Success was not hard to come by. In fact, diners' patronage of the place was beyond expectation.

Friends swear by Gerry's marinades and his barbecues. At their new hangout, which was aptly named (what else?) Gerry's Grill, his unschooled wizardry at the grill and at the kitchen was finally put to commercial test.

As time passed on, the barkada became bigger and bigger and before Gerry Apolinario knew it, Gerry's Grill has found a niche in the restaurant row, serving a great number of diners who yearn for some hearty, old-fashioned home cooking.

Today, Gerry's Grill has 25 outlets nationwide and one in Union City, California, USA. More than 30 franchises are expected to be operational within the year, together with another outlet in Cerrito, Los Angeles.

Gerry's ever-expanding menu counts some 120 choices to date, including all-time favorites like Sizzling Sisig and Inihaw na Pusit, Crispy Pata and Kare-Kare, fish sizzlers like Blue Marlin, Tuna Belly and Bangus, Pinakbet and Green Mango Salad.

For starters, Bangus Sisig is the latest sisig variant, which originally had two-Pork Sisig and Tuna Sisig. The pleasant discovery is that calamansi-flavored Bangus Sisig makes a delicious dish, with or without the beer!

Chicken Inasal, chicken marinated in specialty vinegar, is a welcome option to the more traditional Chicken Inihaw and to the Chicken Kebab.

The farmer's dish Bulanglang na Bangus Belly is an equally healthy alternative to Pinakbet and highlights the goodness of sautéed farm vegetables (string beans, squash, eggplant and bitter melon) poured over choice slices of broiled milkfish belly.

If you're tired of the usual sinigang and nilaga soups, then try the Halaan Soup, fresh local clams delicately flavored by ginger and sili leaves.

Must try is the Tinomok, which is inspired by the Bicolano delicacy of ground pork and shrimp rolled into gabi leaf balls, spiced up and slowly simmered over coconut cream.

As loyal diners of Gerry's Grill aptly describe their dining experience, "We'd rather still be at Gerry's" Masaganang pagkain!
