FELLOW SPECIALISTS, SPECIALIZED FELLOWS

What programs are offered where

By Jin Paul de Guzman

THE IDEA THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE TBE BRILLIANT INVENTORS AND ARTISTS AND PHILOSOPHERS AND MATHEMATICIANS AT THE SAME TIME-THE "RENAISSANCE MAN" IDEAL-IS PROBABLY PASSÉ. GIVEN THE PRESENT TREND TOWARD HYPERSPECIALIZATION, PRODUCING ANOTHER MAN OR WOMAN OF THE STATURE OF, SAY, LEONARDOR DESCARTES MAY BE NEXT TIMPOSSIBLE. WHICH IS NOT TSAY THERE EXISTS NONE WHHAS NEAR TRANSCENDENT INTELLECT OR TALENT; IT'S JUST THAT TODAY'S STAKES ARE WAY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE IN THE MIDDLE AGES OR THE RENAISSANCE.

ARGUABLY THIS OLD-WORLD IDEAL IS WHAT MAKES SOME PEOPLE RAIL AGAINST THE "BARBARISM" OF SPECIALIZATION. HOWEVER, IT WOULD BE MUCH TOFACILE TESTABLISH DIRECT OPPOSITION BETWEEN SPECIALIZATION AND "JACK OF ALL TRADES"-NESS AND DECIDE ONE IS GOOD AND THE OTHER EVIL. IT'S RARELY EVER AN ISSUE OF BLACK AGAINST WHITE, ALTHOUGH SOME PEOPLE WOULD HAVE US BELIEVE IT IS.

THE SCIENCES, INCLUDING MEDICINE, HAVE REPEATEDLY BEEN ATTACKED FOR FOSTERING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT FAVORS SPECIALIZATION. THE ARGUMENT IS ALWAYS THAT THIS IS A CLASSIC CASE OF SEEING THE PARTS INSTEAD OF THE WHOLE. BUT WHAT IS ALWAYS FORGOTTEN IS THAT ONE HAS TBE A GENERALIST FIRST BEFORE HE BECOMES A SPECIALIST OR A SUBSPECIALIST; THAT SUBSPECIALIZATION DOESN'T, OR SHOULDN'T, MEAN IGNORING THE BIG PICTURE; THAT THE TRAINING OF SUBSPECIALISTS DOES NOT MAKE GENERALISTS UNNECESSARY. INSTEAD THIS LEAVES ROOM FOR GENERALISTS AND DIFFERENT SUBSPECIALISTS TWORK TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL.

WHAT FOLLOWS IS JUST A SAMPLING OF THE DIFFERENT MEDICAL SUBSPECIALTIES IN THE COUNTRY, AND THE INSTITUTIONS IN WHICH TRAINING IS CONDUCTED.

Helping Fellows with Fellowship

Fellowship involves dedication, lots of sweat, sacrifices, and support. The assistance provided for by the following organizations, however, benefit not just the Fellows themselves but alstheir fellows in serious need of their medical expertise.

Merciful Fellows

In 2001, the Philippine Band of Mercy (PBM) started its program of sponsoring one surgeon per year tundertake a three-year specialized Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training program under the supervision of the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons.

PBM fellows serve as volunteer consultants in the different parts of the country where they establish their practice. They serve the needs of indigent children with cleft lip and palate deformities.

PBM president and trustee Jesus Perez Cardenas says PBM's vision is tproduce a plastic surgeon every year beginning 2004. Once certified, the fellow will provide his/her services tPBM within the Nationwide Hospital Network.

Three doctors are now in the program. In 2001, Dr. Reden Abella was the first tbe accepted. Next was Dr. Christine Atienza and for this year is Dr. Gilbert Esquejo.

Call 63-2-4042516, +63-2-4042518; email (pbm@skynet.net); or visit its web site (www.philbandofmercy.org.)

Fruitful Partnership

Organon Philippines supports a two-year fellowship training program for doctors whwish tsubspecialize in reproductive endocrinology. Their training is under the advanced care reproductive unit (ARCU) at St. Luke's Medical Center (SLMC) and the Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (PSREI). Under this program, the fellows get a monthly stipend.

Dr. Sylvia Santos, medical adviser of Organon, says the ARCU, SLMC, and PSREI are responsible for the selection of a Fellow for this program.
